THE stage production of the classic 70s prison comedy Porridge arrived at the Theatre Royal last night, in what was a vibrant and charming performance full of energy, heart and, most importantly, plenty of laughs.

It is almost impossible to remember the original television series without instantly thinking of Ronnie Barker.

With his superlative comedic timing and acting prowess, the character Fletcher soon became one of the best loved on television.

Here, Shaun Williamson, best known as the bumbling Barry in EastEnders, has the unenviable task of following such a legend.

It is testament to the actor that he manages to capture quite perfectly the essence of the character.

Serving time in HM Prison Slade, Fletcher is one of those larger than life individuals, always equipped with a witty remark and always striving to get one over the authorities.

Here, passports are smuggled in and soft, expensive toilet paper is stolen from the officers' private facilities.

Indeed it is these "tiny victories", as he refers to them in a scene with cell-mate Godber (Daniel West) that get them through their time in prison, and reclaim a tiny fraction of freedom and power.

It is a rather poignant moment that provides a reflection on the isolation and dependence these men face.

That's not to say that the humour takes second fiddle though. North East writers Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais have created some new jokes, as well as packing in classic moments from the original.

The fixing of a boxing match between Godber and one of the other inmates received one of the loudest ovations on the night, whilst famous lines such as "tell 'em you've got bad feet" can't fail but bring a smile to your face.

Every scene is set against the backdrop of a stage design faithful to the original show.

Although old jokes are recycled, the fact that they still work highlights both the strength of the writing and the way these characters manage to resonate with an audience.

Fletcher in particular oozes roguish charm. Calm under pressure, taking his sentence on the chin and toying with the ruthless authorities.

It is such characteristics and themes that the cast of this performance of Porridge have so brilliantly and hilariously held onto.

Sam Cahill (Tobey Maguire) is an army captain dutifully heading for a tour in Afghanistan, but also doing his best to fulfil his responsibilities at home with his wife Grace (Natalie Portman) and his two young daughters (Bailee Madison and Taylor Geare, both charmingly natural).

One of his family obligations is to pick up his brother Tommy (Jake Gyllenhaal) from prison, where he's just served a three-year stretch for armed robbery. Tattooed, glib, and possessed of an insouciant charm, Tommy's bad boy ways have neither endeared him to Grace, nor his own father (Sam Shepard), a Vietnam vet whose love and tolerance is exclusively spent on Sam.

But while serving in Afghanistan, Sam's Blackhawk helicopter is shot down. Sam is presumed dead, and his family is promptly given the bad news.

Except Sam is not dead. He and a private, Joe Willis (Patrick Flueger) have been taken prisoner by the Taliban. Sam sternly counsels the soldier to keep quiet in the presence of his captors, with good reason, as it turns out.

Stateside, after absorbing the trauma of his brother's death, Tommy is finally bequeathed a purpose in life -- to help Grace and his two nieces get their lives into a semblance of normalcy, starting with renovating Grace's barely functional kitchen.

By the time Sam returns to the family fold, it is he who occupies the role of the volatile loose cannon while Tommy manfully does his best to keep the familial threads from unravelling.

It is an impressive dramatic inversion, but the story never shakes with the tremors of narrative contrivance.

That is mostly due to Sheridan, a director who shuns stylistic superfluity and seems naturally inclined to real sympathy for his characters.

Maguire and Gyllenhaal likewise help keep the story -- a remake of a Danish film -- fresh and organic. This movie serves to remind us how, prior to playing a certain arachnid-dude, Maguire was an adventurous, thoroughly committed young actor who radiated intensity.

Here's a timely reminder of what he can do, before Spider-Man 4 wraps him back in the hero web.

Running in the colours of St Mary's College, Twickenham, international distance star Harvey stormed home in a time of 23 minutes and eight seconds.

Harvey's St Mary's team-mates included another highly-rated Great Britain international Steph Twell, who won the women's race in 22mins 41secs.

Another St Mary's athlete, Andy Vernon made it a double for the south west London college by clinching the men's race in 34mins 34secs.

As morale-boosting returns go, it could hardly have gone better for former Ivybridge Community College student Harvey - who, it should not be forgotten, last raced early in 2009 at the Inter- Counties and World Trials in Nottingham.

The double-whammy effectively wiped out last year's winter and summer track campaign for the 20-year-old.

The second-city event doubles as a qualifier for the World Cross Country Championships, which are being staged in Bydgoszcz, Poland at the end of March.

"The UK cross country qualifier is the next big challenge for me," added Harvey.

"I'm also hopeful of getting a nomination to compete at the world cross champs in Canada in April.

"Fingers-crossed this should be a much better year for me."

TRIBUTES poured in from the film world last night for Lionel Jeffries, who died after a long illness at the age of 83.

Best known for directing The Railway Children and acting in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, he passed away yesterday morning at a nursing home in Dorset, England.

Born in London's East End in 1926, Jeffries served in Burma during World War II before training to become an actor at RADA.

He made his stage and screen debut in the 1950s and went on to star in Camelot, First Men In The Moon and The Trials of Oscar Wilde.

His early hair loss - which he blamed on his war service - made him look older than he was. He played Grandpa Potts in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, starring as Dick Van Dyke's father despite the fact that he was six months younger.

In the 1970s, he made The Railway Children, based on E Nesbit's book.

Actress Jenny Agutter, who starred in the film, described him as 'an extraordinary replica tag heruer watches character' and 'wonderfully funny'. She added: 'He was a total dear to work with.' Milkman Ken Bond, from Redfield, was called up when he was 18 and was drafted into the 1st/4th Essex Regiment alongside the 4th Indian Division. After spells in the North African desert and Egypt, in February 1944, Mr Bond fought in the fierce battle for the rocky hill in Italy which he described as a "needless slaughter".

The conflict, which raged between January and March 1944, is considered one of the most bloody of World War II.

In a bid to dominate the only road to Rome, the Allies launched four massive attacks on the hill, sending men from numerous nations to their deaths.

After weeks of misery, terrible weather, hunger and constant shelling Mr Bond spent his 21st birthday on March 5, 1944, on a hill under constant fire from German troops.

He was part of a division charged with dislodging the enemy from a monastery perched on top of Monte Cassino from which the Allies were under persistent fire.

The mission seemed certain to end in the slaughter of the Allied troops but a brave officer reached them and led the retreat to safety.

Mr Bond always remembered that officer, who was killed shortly afterwards, and the brave Polish soldiers who secured the monastery but suffered great losses.

Mr Bond was demobbed from the Army in 1945 and returned to Bristol and worked as a milkman.

He then gained a job with Rolls Royce where he saw Concorde's inaugural flights. Mr Bond, who had one son - Clive - with wife Rene, lived at his birth home in Cooperage Road well into his 80s. Rene sadly died several years ago.

In retirement he enjoyed attending Board Mills, Barton Hill Settlement and Salvation Army Luncheon clubs, and being "tea boy" at Easton's Women's Fellowship gatherings.

But above all it was his Friday Club, of which with Rene he was a founder member in 1995, that occupied much of his time until a few years ago.

In 2004 Irene Matthews, 90, of St Werburghs became his friend, companion and carer.

She said: "Everybody thought he was brilliant. I fell in love when I was 85.

"He was very warm and caring and we never argued about anything.

"We were lovely company for each other and I miss him terribly."

Mr Bond, who died on February 12, donated his body to medical research at Bristol University's anatomy section. A memorial service is being held for Mr Bond at Etloe Evangelical Church in Cossins Road, Redland, at 3pm today. All who knew Mr Bond are welcome to attend.
