Evesham success would boost Ti

TIVERTON Town boss Martyn Rogers believes his side can take a big step towards securing their Southern League Premier Division status with a win tomorrow.

The Yellows have scrambled into 14th place and five points clear of the relegation zone following their midweek win over struggling Clevedon Town.

Rogers' men face another team struggling at the wrong end of the division in Evesham United tomorrow.

And the Tivvy chief will be urging classic tall ugg boots his players on to another three points in order to put more clear daylight between themselves and the sides below, while also boosting the Mid Devon side's chances of breaking into mid-table.

Rogers said: "Getting a win tomorrow and a result against Merthyr Tydfil the following week will go a long way towards ending our relegation worries.

"I like to be looking up the table rather than down, but we are still looking back at the moment because two or three bad results can put you back in the mix.

"It would be great to get away from the relegation zone once and for all."

Captain Nathan Rudge will return to the Tivvy fold this weekend after serving a two-game ban.

And the timing could not have been any better for the Yellows, as fellow defender Adam Faux starts a three-game suspension tomorrow following his dismissal at Didcot for violent conduct.

Rogers said he was delighted to have his captain available for selection again, and hopes Faux uses his spell on the sidelines to reflect on the foolish nature of his ban.

"I am chuffed to bits to have Nathan back. We played well on Tuesday, but he will be straight back in the team regardless because of his organisational skills and his strength at set-pieces," Rogers said.

"Adam was stung a bit by the criticism I gave him after his sending off at Didcot and to be fair to him he didn't play badly against Hednesford, while the other night he did excellently, I was really pleased with him.

"We had a chat and he said he was unhappy with what I said in the paper, but I told him he only had himself to blame and his temper is something he has got to curb.

"Hopefully he will think about it and count to 10 before trying to get retribution straight away next time."

Despite the absence of Faux, Rogers expects the mood in the visitors' dressing room to be buoyant tomorrow.

Jamie Hatch will retain his place in midfield alongside Colin Marshall while Oxford United loanee Richard Groves will be looking to build on the promising performance he produced at The Hand Stadium on Tuesday.

Forward Adam Mortimer will also be pressing his claims to start against the Robins after his goal gave Tivvy all three points in midweek.

And Jake Wannell could feature on the bench if he comes through a fitness test, giving Rogers plenty of options to choose from.

He said: "I think all the lads who picked up knocks at Clevedon will be okay to play.

"After Tuesday it was funny how the dressing room was totally different to how it was after the Hednesford game and I like to think we are going up to Evesham in the right frame of mind."

Evidence of beating all lies,

THE evidence against two men accused of beating a disabled Levin man in his own home is all lies, say defence lawyers.

But the Crown is adamant the two off-duty caregivers were the only people with a motive and opportunity to inflict the injuries.

Both men, who Mulberry Replica Handbags have interim name suppression, are on trial in the Palmerston North District Court for injuring with intent to injure the disabled man in 2007.

The man suffered two fractured ribs, bruising to his back and chest and a wound on his cheek and tongue. One of the accused was leaving the job after about 18 years of caring for the mentally and physically disabled.

He had organised a farewell at the community home which the other accused attended.

The Crown alleges in the early hours of March 23, after several hours of drinking, the two men put the disabled man back to bed and beat him.

"Two drunk men thumping, swearing, doing damage when one of them has previously said that he wanted to get out before he did damage to that bastard," Crown prosecutor Chris Shannon said during his summing up yesterday.

The departing caregiver had a motive to hurt the man, he said.

"He was drunk, he had already resigned, he couldn't lose his job because of that, so really he had nothing to lose."

Mr Shannon said the other accused had lied and had given various accounts of where he was and when.

The man's lawyer, Douglas Ewen, Juicy Couture Replica said chinese whispers had caused a twisted version of what actually happened and the woman who was working night shift was a self-confessed liar. "A version that she gave on oath . . . she admitted that was wrong."

Mr Ewen told the jury the woman's body language portrayed a person not telling the truth.

The departing man's lawyer, Christopher Stevenson, said his client had left the house before the injuries were inflicted.

During initial interviews with police and her employers the woman made no mention of the departing caregiver being involved.

Her reasoning was that she was scared of him.

"Whatever is going on in her head Glashutte Replica that was an explanation that just doesn't measure up . . .," Mr Stevenson said.

Judge Alistair Garland was due to sum up the case today.

British curlers on the brink

GREAT BRITAIN's men improved their chances of reaching the curling semifinals by grinding out a 4-2 win over the USA at Vancouver Olympic Centre.

Bally Handbags

Britain are now one of three teams - Switzerland and Sweden are the others - on four wins and three defeats from seven round robin matches.

It was a case of being patient for skip David Murdoch, Ewan MacDonald, Pete Smith and Euan Byers as the Americans deployed defensive tactics.

Although Britain went behind 1-0 in the second end they scored two points in the fifth end to nose ahead and extended their lead to 3-1 with a steal for one in the sixth.

Britain forced the USA to take one point in the eighth end so that they were on hammer for the final two ends of the game leading 3-2. In the 10th end, Murdoch made a draw to out-count the USA stone and wrap up a hardearned and crucial win. The British quartet now face Germany on Monday and Norway on Tuesday in their remaining matches.

And after a tough start to the world champions' Olympic campaign, veteran third Macdonald believes the increased pressure of the next two matches will help bring out the best in them.

Triple world champion Macdonald said: "Once we've got our backs against the wall we seem to come up with the goods. We're back in that position again so we've got to dig deep."

Murdoch said: "It's another win on the board and now we just have to execute the same gameplan against Germany. I think the way the team is playing at the moment it should be good.

"We were close to topgear last night against Canada but when a team plays defensively against you it's hard to play that type of game. We're playing well and we've certainly got the confidence we need."

Meanwhile Britain's women went down 10-6 against Switzerland, their fourth round robin loss of the Games, leaving them needing to win their remaining two games and rely on favourable results to make the semi-finals.

A mistake by 19-yearold skip Eve Muirhead in the fourth end allowed the Swiss to score four points and open up an 8-1 lead.

Britain rallied to make it 9-6 and Swiss skip Mirjam Ott gave Muirhead a chance in the ninth end, but Muirhead was too light with her final stone and when the Swiss skip sent down the hammer to gain a point for a 10-6 lead, Britain conceded the game.

BRIT SURGE

THOUSANDS of British troops stormed Taliban positions in a pre- dawn assault this morning as part of the biggest offensive in the Afghanistan war.

Operation Moshtarak began with waves of US marines swooping on the last major militant stronghold of Majer, central Helmand.

As more than 8,000 soldiers blasted their way towards the town, 4,000 Brits attacked Taliban hideouts nearby. The Grenadier Guards and Royal Welsh Fake Oris Watches charged insurgents holed up in three key positions at Nad-e-Ali, Chahe Anjir and Babaji.

Before the 15,000-strong push, the UK's Brig James Cowan, commander of Taskforce Helmand, told his men in a stirring pre- battle speech that their aim was not to "crush the Taliban but to win the people".

Brig Cowan pointed out that Operation Moshtarak - it means "together" in the local Dari dialect - will see our forces fighting alongside their Afghan partners as well as other allies.

He added: "I can think of no better name, for we are in this together. We planned it together, we will fight it together, we will see it through together. Afghans with allies, soldiers with civilians, government with its people. Together, Operation Moshtarak will mark the start of the end of this insurgency."

A military source said last night: "The British sector of this historymaking battle is an essential part of the assault to get rid of the Taliban.

"It's a hazardous operation and troops will be up against a formidable force of insurgents, dug in and protected by mines and IED (improvised explosive device) fields."

US marine commanders expect up to 1,000 insurgents, including more than 100 foreign fighters to be in Majer, a town of 80,000 people. Lt Col Matt Bazeley, commanding officer of our 28 Engineer Regiment, warned around 200 of his men: "We are going into the heart of darkness. It is bloody dangerous out there."

But he added: "This is what you have been trained for. You will be tested. If things go wrong, no sad moments, no pauses. We regather, recock and go again. Much of this op rests on us."

The attack on Majer is the biggest joint Afghan-international offensive of the conflict and the largest since President Barack Obama ordered in 30,000 extra US service personnel in December to turn the tide of the war.
