GKN to move manufacturing jobs

UNIONS have described plans by engineering giant GKN to move 60 manufacturing jobs to China as "extremely disappointing".

GKN which partners Airbus at its Filton site, is moving the production of its electrical harness for the A320 aircraft - which houses a wing's electrical system - to rival firm Fokker in China.

But GKN has insisted affected workers will not be made redundant, and will be offered jobs elsewhere in Filton.

However, staff who work in the affected division have been offered early retirement, a voluntary redundancy package and retraining as part of the deal.

The transfer of work will begin in March and be finished by September.

Retraining for staff transferring to other arms of the GKN business begins in May.

GKN works convener Mark Thomas said: "We are extremely disappointed GKN has decided to outsource this work to China, but are confident the company will find work for the staff."

GKN took over the manufacturing side of Airbus - and 1,500 of its staff - in a Pounds 300 million deal struck in September 2008.

Airbus has retained 4,500 staff who work mainly in research and development for wings and landing gear for the whole range of its planes.

Frank Bamford, senior vice president for business development and strategy, GKN Aerospace said: "GKN Aerospace is investing substantially in the Filton operation, creating new jobs and bringing in new skills that mean security for our employees. We reiterate, there are no compulsory redundancies at Filton and we are totally committed to growing and strengthening the operation there, extending the skills of our workforce and creating a world centre of excellence in wing structures.

"GKN Aerospace is not prepared to comment on the internal detail of our operations, or on any consultations we may have as we maintain our valuable working relationship with our workforce and their trade union representatives."

GKN has spent about Pounds 100m at a new plant in Easter Compton, near Avonmouth, to produce wings for the new A350 aircraft.
