CHEN JIN'S psychological war against Lee Chong Wei nearly paid off but the World No 1 pulled off a great escape to reach the semi- finals of the Malaysia Open yesterday.
Chong Wei, who has only lost once to China's Chen Jin in more than 10 meetings, secured a hard-earned 21-14, 16-21, 21-15 win in 70 minutes.
Pandora Beads WholesaleOn the eve of the match, Chen Jin claimed he doesn't fear Chong Wei and ridiculed the Malaysian while declaring his objectives are to win the majors.
Yesterday, Chong Wei needed every bit of concentration on a day where he couldn't produce his best but had the extra to overcome Chen Jin.
Chong Wei handed Chen Jin a thrashing in the semi-finals of the Korea Open last week but now he must be aware that he has his work out if he wants to win his sixth Malaysia Open crown.
The Malaysian will meet Vietnam's Nguyen Tien Minh in the last four today and complacency is the last thing he needs.
"This was the toughest mental test for me and I believe this is the tunring point that I needed in order to win the Malaysia Open," said Chong Wei.
"The match was all about the mental strength and he led me all the way in the third game and I was down 9-13 but I managed to come back. The fans also helped me with their great support.
'I am a little exhausted after playing in the Korea Open and this is my second match going into three games but I can recover to continue battling.
"It is time to focus on the semi-finals. I have lost to Tien Minh before (in the Singapore Open last year) and he is a dangerous player.'
Tien Minh, who defeated Jan Jorgensen of Denmark 21-17, 22-20 in 42 minutes, is already resigned to the fact that Chong Wei is too strong at home and is contented to come this far in the tournament.
"I have beaten Chong Wei once but he is just too strong here. I have done well enough to reach the semi-finals and my aim is to enjoy the match tomorrow (today)," said Tien Minh.
Back-up shuttler Chong Wei Feng's campaign ended as paper bag printing expected when he fell 21-14, 21-9 to Thailand's Boonsak Ponsana in 31 minutes.
In another match, 34-year-old Peter Gade Christensen of Denmark advanced to the semi-finals after beating Thailand's Tanongsak Saemsomboonsuk 21-15, 21-13 in 36 minutes and will meet Boonsak.
In the women's singles, Japan's Eriko Hirose upset World No 2 Wang Lin of China 21-19, 15-21, 21-19 in 68 minutes.
She will play China's Wang Xin, who beat India's Saina Nehwal 14- 21 21-8 21-11, in the last four.
